Have you considered an inner white border like you said and then and outer scallopped border - made up of the fabrics used in the quilt. You could sew together blocks like you would a piano key or maybe larger strips, and then once quilted, trim it to a scallop edge. Then binding...you could do scrappy or pick one of the colors...I'd probably pick one of the greens. I'm glad that hospice has been a good experience for you and that Chris is still up and feeling fairly good.
